The Institute is well-known for its excellent experimental facilities which are on the top of world-wide scientifique and technological development in many fields of research. In the hands of skilled and experienced specialists such facilities are excellent tools to take leadership in a wealth of fields of research.
Central scientific facility (CSF) Biomaterials, Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, Boehm group and Cavalcanti-Adam group
The central scientific facility "Biomaterials" comprises two groups which are lead by Dr. Heike Boehm and Dr. Ada Cavalcanti-Adam. The CSF provides important techniques to characterize physical properties of biological or biomimetic materials. A key aspect herein lies in the investigation of basic functions and applications of nanoscopic biosystems. This is achieved on the one hand by designing, studying and characterizing a number of different crystalline, nanostructured, or biological materials.
The tasks of the Central Scientific Facility are: Analytical characterization of metallic, ceramic and organic materials, of the starting materials and additives with respect to purity (contaminants at trace levels); stoichiometric composition (main- and subsidiary components), and control of the preparation process (main, subsidiary, and trace components); Coordination and consultation in the field of the procurement of chemicals and noble metals, actualisation and disposal of hazardous materials. We plan, realize, and operate the computing facilities of the MPI IS. The coordination of our hardware procurement, administration and maintenance of standardized software, and backup of user data are also part of our responsibilities. [more]
Stable microstructures are the fundament of devices in science and technology. The Central Scientific Facility Materials prepares metal, ceramic or semiconductor thin films by means of physical vapour deposition. Tailored microstructures are achieved by studying nucleation, film formation and evolution of the different material systems. [more]
