Intelligent autonomous systems must be able to perceive their environment efficiently and robustly in order to navigate in our complex and changing world. The major challenge for mobile perception is to transform the huge amounts of ambiguous and incomplete measurements into easily accessible and compact representations. Besides, for 3D interpretation of the scene, the information lost by the projection process of the camera must be recovered, thus requiring to solve an inverse problem.

The Max Planck Research Group for Autonomous Vision develops mathematical models and algorithms for wholistic, efficient and robust interpretation of dynamic 3D scenes from video sequences. A particular research focus is the extraction of 3D geometry, 3D motion and semantics, as well as contextual relationships using a-priori knowledge about the scene. Furthermore, the group investigates how computationally expensive generative models can be exploited to derive efficient discriminative models (e.g., deep neural networks). The main application areas of the developed techniques are mobile robotics and autonomous driving.
