Has exercising ever felt like a chore? What if you could play with a robot and get the benefits of active physical exercise? Led by Katherine J. Kuchenbecker, the MPI-IS Haptic Intelligence department aims to develop new technologies for generating realistic social-physical interactions with robots. We are investigating motivational exercise interactions beneficial to therapy, and designing new robot behavior based on this knowledge.
We are looking for:
Student assistant (m/f/d)
Volume of employment: max. 83 hours a month
Starting as soon as possible
In this research context, we are looking for talented students who are pursuing a Bachelor of Science (3rd or 4th year) or Master of Science degree in computer science (Informatik), engineering cybernetics (Technische Kybernetik), mechatronics (Mechatronik), electrical engineering (Elektrotechnik), mechanical engineering (Maschinenbau), or medical engineering (Medizintechnikor) to support our research as student assistants (HiWi) or interns. Possible tasks include:
- Assistance with preparing and conducting research studies with human subjects,
- Setting up inertial and visual motion capture equipment, and
- Collecting and analyzing camera images and motion capture data.
This hourly paid student assistant position will allow the student to gain hands-on experience with motion capture systems, as well as be exposed to ongoing human-robot interaction research. The concrete position and tasks are subject to discussion with interested candidates. Selected candidates can start working as soon as they are hired.

Applicants should have
- high motivation
- strong academic performance in relevant bachelor’s and/ or master’s courses
- good programming skills in MATLAB and/ or Python
- experience working with sensors and cameras
- interest in working in an international and inter-disciplinary research group
- good oral and written communication skills in English
We are also interested in candidates who have
- experience in conducting human-subject experiments
- experience with electrical design and circuitry
- familiarity with ROS (Robot Operating System)
- good oral, and written communication skills in German
