Our group has broad interests in the interaction of optical, electric, and magnetic fields with matter at small length scales. We work on new 3-D fabrication methods, self-assembly, actuation, and propulsion. We have observed a number of fundamental effects and are developing new experimental techniques and instruments.

  • new micro-robotic systems
  • how to construct and power autonomous systems
  • swimming at low Reynolds numbers
  • 3D nanofabrication
  • Janus particles and colloidal molecules
  • magnetic phenomena related to symmetry breaking and actuation
  • the physical chemistry of chirality and chiral nanostructures
  • new optical effects in linear, nonlinear, and ultrafast spectroscopy
