In the glass workshop gadgets made of borosilicate glass and fused quartz are designed, fabricated and repaired according to the instructions of the scientists. Samples are encapsulated in different kinds of glass (vacuum or gas). Also part of the workshop's responsibilities are drilling and grinding of glass, ceramic and sapphire for which diamond drills or ultrasonic are used. Furthermore, silver and gold coating of glass gadgets and the fabrication of glass-metal-compounds are included in the wide range of tasks.

The Service Group Fine Mechanical Workshop within the Institute takes care for the production of single components as well as bigger devices needed for our research. Those are manufactured according to engineering drawings, freehand sketches and prototypes handed in by the scientific departments and service groups. We are mainly concerned with the production of small, fine mechanical parts, e.g. specimen holders, but we also care for justifications of existing equipment as well as their repair.
